It is all to easy to lose yourself for the sake of taking care of your loved one. However, finding yourself again is not as daunting a task as it may seem. Most people who care for a loved one can name every single thing about the loved one they care for. They can name every medication the loved one is on. The can name almost everything about their loved one like:
- favorite food
- favorite channel
- reading preference
- beloved activities
Which is only to name a few.
The longer a caregiver cares for the loved one, the more time, focus and energy they spend on their loved one. They can start to lose parts of themselves. The caregiver sacrifices what was once important to them. This can include what they enjoyed and What they even needed. All so that they can effectively care for their loved one.
To all of the caregivers that have done this, I write this to you. Start to find yourself again. Losing yourself not only does yourself a disservice, it also does the same to the one you care for. This can lead to the first steps of resentment to the one you care for.
Finding yourself again
I am issuing a challenge to all caregivers.
Make a list. Make a list of ten things you enjoy. This can range from foods, to shows, to books, who activities. This doesn’t mean things you actively do anymore.
It means if given the opportunity, what would you be doing. To help you along, I will be including my own top ten list.
My top ten list:
- Chinese food
- Website coding
- Watching anime
- Cooking new recipes
- Playing Video Games
- Chatting with people
- Going out to the store to just look
- Researching psychology topics
A lot of people have to think long and hard to find ten things they enjoy doing, caregivers leading the pack. The person they care for becomes the most important thing in their lives. They live and breathe their loved one. This is the time rediscover who you are, reclaim that person, and once again become an individual.
I am guilty of that too. This blog helps me reconnect to who I used to be. If you read my list, I love to write.
To all those who are caregivers and have lost a sense of self, rediscover who you are!
Have a wonderful day and give a care!
Especially to yourself.
